2 Seriously Injured In Wrong-Way Driving Incident On I-70

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A head-on collision tied up traffic on Interstate 70 near the airport Wednesday morning.

Several drivers spotted a yellow Nissan Xterra going approximately 80 miles per hour the wrong direction on Pena Boulevard. It continued on I-70 heading west in the eastbound lanes. When it got to Chambers Road it hit a Dodge Caravan driven by Steven Jones, 49, of Denver.

Police have identified the driver of the Nissan as Taylor Payne, 64, of Blanding, Utah.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Jones received a fractured sternum, wrist and ankle. Payne received a fractured leg and possible internal injuries.

"Investigators initially believed Mr. Payne may have been drinking as he stated incoherently, 'two beers,' several times," Lt. Charles DeShazer with Aurora police said in a statement. "It has since been discovered Mr. Payne more than likely suffered some type of medical issue which is being evaluated."

The investigation is ongoing.
