Fort Collins Step Closer To Allowing Door-To-Door Sales

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Fort Collins is one step closer to ending its ban on door-to-door sales. After a federal lawsuit from a dairy, the city council gave preliminary approval to allowing companies to sell door to door.

If the change is approved, businesses would have to pay for a permit and sales tax license. Each solicitor would be issued a photo ID from the city after a background check.

Hours for door-to-door sales would be limited from 8 a.m. to half an hour after sunset.

Fort Collins residents would be able to put up no soliciting or no trespassing signs. They could also get on the city's no soliciting list that companies have to follow.

Many homeowners say they like being able to keep solicitors away, but some aren't sure signs and a list will do the job.

"I don't want a sign on my door anyway to say 'no solicitors.' And there is an opt out list then … they can always say, 'Well I didn't see your name on the list.' I think there's nothing wrong with the law the way it is right now," Fort Collins resident Doug Krohn said.

"I don't think it will affect me very much because I can control whether they come to the door or not," resident Judy Wiersma said. "You could put your name on a list or you could put the sign on your door. I don't think it's a big deal."

City council will have a final vote on the issue on May 17.
