McDonald's Hopes To Hire 1,000 In Denver Area Today

DENVER (CBS4/AP)- McDonald's went on a hiring spree in the Denver metro area on Tuesday. The fast food restaurant hopes to hire 1,000 people to fill crew and restaurant management positions as part of its "National Hiring Day."

The company said it is adding staff as business improves and more stores stay open 24 hours.

Gov. John Hickenlooper stopped by a downtown McDonald's and said those positions available may not be the high-paying jobs he's promised to help create, but he said everyone has to start somewhere.

Openings include managers, full time, seasonal and part time workers. Most positions pay the minimum wage of $7.36 an hour.

Nationwide there will likely be 3 to 4 new hires for every restaurant.

Franchise owner Tom Carlson said managers can earn up to $60,000 in wages and bonuses if they stick with the company

The fast-food giant says it has 50,000 jobs to fill nationwide.

People who are interested in applying for an available position are encouraged to visit their participating local McDonald's or apply online at mccolorado.com.

Colorado's unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for March, that's higher than the national average of 8.6 percent.
