Former Lawmaker Wants Semis Off I-70 At Peak Times

DENVER (CBS4) - A former Colorado state legislator has proposed a new plan to ease congestion on the Interstate 70 mountain corridor.

Dan Gibbs, who is now a Summit County commissioner, wants the state to look into banning semi trucks during peak hours on the interstate. Travel from Summit County to Denver can double and even triple during busy ski weekends.

The state and the Colorado Department of Transportation are already considering several long and short term proposals to fixing the road. Some of those solutions cost millions and in some cases, billions of dollars.

Gibbs says his solution would be very cost effective.

"The state doesn't have the funds right now, so I think we need to look at every alternative possible," Gibbs said.

The trucking industry is fighting the proposal, saying I-70 is a critical east/west thoroughfare.
