Traffic Stop Turns Into Car Chase In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say an early morning traffic stop in Jefferson County turned into a car chase.

The passenger of a Ford Escape allegedly took off Friday while the original driver was being arrested.

Police say 39-year-old Sonia Zamudio of Commerce City was driving when she was stopped and arrested for having fictitious plates, no proof of insurance and driving while her license was under restraint.

They say her passenger, 46-year-old Harles Apodaca of Denver sped away in the SUV when the trooper left to arrest Zamudio.

Police found the vehicle about 30 minutes later while he attempted to elude troopers. He crashed into a tree at an intersection in Lakewood and ran away on foot. Police caught him and took him into custody on charges that include vehicular eluding and resisting arrest.
