Colorado Tax Amnesty Passes First Hurdle

DENVER (AP) -- A proposed two-month amnesty in which Colorado tax scofflaws would be able to pay what they owe without interest or penalties has cleared its first hurdle in the Legislature. But Republicans say a part of the bill that would set up a review of who is eligible is doomed.

The Senate Finance Committee voted 4-3 Thursday for the tax amnesty. Republicans voting against it say they like the proposal but not provisions for a review of who would be eligible and whether the tax breaks achieve what lawmakers want.

Democrats say reviews are needed to see how much money the state would be giving up in tax revenue. But the Republican House has already rejected the idea.
