Police Seek Video Of Colorado Crash That Killed 5

DENVER (AP) - Police were sorting through witness statements Saturday and trying to find any video recordings of a collision that left a family of five dead when their pickup was struck by an SUV that had gone airborne.

Investigators were seeking video from business surveillance cameras that may have captured the Thursday crash at a busy intersection in the north Denver suburb of Thornton, police spokesman Matt Barnes said.

Authorities said Monica Chavez, 33, of Denver, was driving a Ford Expedition at high speed when it crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a sedan, went airborne and crashed into the top of the pickup.

Killed were Randy Stollsteimer, 34; Crystal Stollsteimer, 31; and their children, 12-year-old Sebastian, 9-year-old Darrian and 7-year-old Cyrus.

Police said the SUV rolled at least once and then smashed through a window at a mattress store.

Chavez, her two children and the driver of the sedan were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Barnes said. The sedan's driver has been released, but Chavez and her children, a 6-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, remained hospitalized Saturday, Barnes said.

One person in mattress store, Paul Roggow, suffered minor injuries from flying glass. He said he heard Chavez's children screaming after the crash.

"(It) keeps replaying in my mind. I keep seeing glass shattering and hearing children screaming," he said.

The Denver Post reported police were waiting for the results of toxicology tests to determine whether Chavez had drugs or alcohol in her system. Barnes told The Associated Press those results could take several days to two weeks.

Two days before the crash, Chavez pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault and was sentenced to two years of probation. Court documents show the charge resulted from an arrest last November.
