Semi Driver Killed In Rollover Crash Near Salida

SALIDA, Colo. (CBS4)- A tanker hauling fuel crashed and rolled off Colorado State Highway 50 just east of Salida on Friday. The semi driver was killed.

Colorado State Patrol has closed Hwy. 50 from mile post 223 to 229 while Hazardous Materials crews clean up any fuel that spilled. They're also monitoring the situation along with Arkansas Head Waters for any contamination of the Arkansas River. Fuel that leaked is flowing away from the river.

The semi was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 50 when it came off the right side of the road in a left curve. The semi and tanker rolled, and then it caught fire.

Hwy. 50 reopened just before 5 p.m. Drivers were detoured at Cotopaxi and Highway 9 just west of Canon City while the highway was closed.

The identity of the driver has not been released. State troopers have not released the destination of the tanker, or where it was traveling from.
