Pedicabs Starting To Show Up In The Mountains

This story was originally published on Jan. 12.

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - They're seen all over downtown Denver. Now pedicabs have come to the mountains.

Getting around in Breckenridge can be a pain. There is hardly a place to park, horse-drawn carriages aren't very practical, and walking in below-freezing weather is hard enough already.

Sometimes, when opportunity knocks, it's as clear as a bell.

"We actually heard it as a passing comment, 'This place needs pedicabs,'" Breckenridge Pedicabs co-owner Heather Olson said. "Immediately a light went off."

"We can weave through and we can get through anything easy," Breckenridge Pedicabs co-owner Kevin Holmquest said. "It just allows people another form of transportation in town -- instead of taking the bus, or if they are tired from walking."

Olson and her fiancé Holmquest started the pedicab business with just two $5,000 bikes and a handful of drivers. It's quickly becoming a popular way to get around town.

"We see a lot of untapped potential, particularly with pedicabs in mountain towns; there aren't too many out there," Olson said. "There are a few starting up, but we're one of the first."

Breckenridge prides itself as a bike-friendly town, but even riding through heavy snow, slush and wind can be pushing it. Still, the pedicabs go on.

"It definitely gets cold," Holmquest said. "You keep going, you get warm, you stop, you go get a cup of coffee and warm up."

Studded tires help.

At $10 or less a ride, it's hard to pass up.
