Community Calls For Justice In Fire Which Killed Senegalese Family

DENVER (CBS4)- The community gathered at the State Capitol on Saturday afternoon to memorialize a family killed in a house fire. The fire tore through a home in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood in Denver on Aug. 5 - one month ago.

"It's been a month and we still don't have any information; we still don't know what's going on," said Mariam Kyabou, a family friend. "We just want justice and we just want them to prioritize it and take it serious."

Djibril Diol, his wife Adja and their 2-year-old daughter, Khadija were killed in the fire. Also killed were Hassan Diol and her infant daughter, Hawa Baye. The family was from Senegal.

Family representatives were joined Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen, who said his department "will not tire until we hold those accountable for this horrific crime." Family attorney Qusair Mohamedbhai also spoke about what he called, "one of the very worst crimes in the history of the city and county of Denver."

A large contingent of the local Oromo community, an ethnic group from Ethiopia, came to show its support for the Diol's family and friends as well.

"We don't know what's normal right now, and we're still mourning," said Ousman Ba, Djibril Diol's friend and former roommate from their time at Colorado State University. "We just want to make sure the city and the state and the PD know that we need this case to be solved."

Investigators said the suspects, wearing full face masks and dark hoodies, fled in a dark-colored sedan after the fire was set. Authorities have offered a $14,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

A large portion of the crowd wore t-shirts with the victims' names printed on the back. Throughout the rally, volunteers also handed out flyers with the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers bulletin, which includes a picture of the persons of interest.

"The pictures are haunting. They look like they're straight out of a horror movie," said Maryam Aida Tidjani, a family friend and organizer of the rally. "For a friend and his whole family to just be murdered like that, it's really been hard for us to feel safe even here anymore."

The surviving family members still need financial help to bury their loved ones. A GoFundMe campaign was created for the Diol family.
