BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)– A man who fell while climbing the Flatirons in Boulder is hoping video of the incident will serve as a warning to others. On April 16, Kyle Walker was climbing the second Flatiron in Boulder.

“Once I got on it, I realized the holds weren’t as prominent as I thought and I was a lot more tired,” he told CBS4’s Dominic Garcia.

Kyle says there was lichen all over the rocks making them slick and that his feet gave out. He wasn’t using any climbing ropes and didn’t have proper climbing shoes when he fell 60 feet.

“I basically free fell for about five seconds and luckily I hit the slab, which was slanted and I think that saved me from pretty much dying instantly,” said Walker.

Kyle had on a GoPro Camera during the climb and it captured his fall. His injuries include eight broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a broken wrist. It took an hour-and-a-half for another hiker to find him and call for help.

“Those guys are the difference between life and death. I really have a lot of respect for those dudes,” Walker said of the first responders.

Kyle hopes his story serves as a warning, and says if you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t even try it.

“It looks easy and they get in over their head, like I did, and fall to their death. I guess this footage is proof that things can absolutely go wrong, so that’s why I’ve agreed to do interviews.”

A 60′ free fall for 5 seconds? Sorry dude, not buying it. Free fall, in Earth’s atmosphere unless there is a lot of wind resistance caused by a large surface area like a feather, of which you are not, is 33′ per second per second until you reach terminal velocity. That means you traveled 33′ in the first second and 66 additional feet in the second second. You claim you did a 60′ foot free fall for 5 seconds and that defies physics. I have no doubt you fell or that you were dumb enough to try the climb without the proper equipment but do you have to compound your stupidity with a lie?

    1. The issue is not so much about physics but of what he means by “freefall.” To him, the term may just mean that he was not roped and falling uncontrollably, rather than that he actually fell without touching the rock face until he collided with the rocky outcropping.

The video appears to show that he was bouncing along the rocks for at least part of the time.

That would slow down his descent, which would reduce the distance he covered.

      Also, YOUR physics are wrong.

You said, “That means you traveled 33′ in the first second.” Actually his speed at the end of the first second would be 32′ per second but he would have traveled only 16′ during that second.

We may disagree with his definition of “freefall,” but that doesn’t make him a liar.

Obviously, he has no sense of time. His fall is recorded and lasted for about 2 seconds.
