Broncos Cut QB Paxton Lynch

By Michael Spencer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - The Broncos have parted ways with 2016 first round pick Paxton Lynch. A day after the Broncos trimmed their roster to 53 and kept Lynch, they informed the quarterback that they have waived him.

Sunday's move ends an up-and-down tenure for Lynch in Denver which saw more downs than ups.

The Broncos traded up to draft him with the 26th pick in the 2016 draft, but Lynch never found his footing as the franchise quarterback the Broncos hoped he would be. He failed to win the starting quarterback job in both 2016 and 2017, and was demoted from second string quarterback to third string quarterback during training camp.

Lynch finishes his time in Denver having appeared in five games with four starts. He threw for four touchdowns and four interceptions and a total of 792 yards. His record as a starter was 1-3.

Lynch is the latest draft pick to be released by John Elway after the Broncos cut nearly half of their 2017 draft class on Saturday. The Broncos released 2017 3rd round picks Carlos Henderson and Brendan Langley, as well as 5th round pick Isaiah McKenzie and 6th round pick De'Angelo Henderson on Saturday.

"Vance (Joseph) and I met with Paxton this morning and informed him that it's best for everyone to make this move," Elway said in a prepared statement. "We appreciate all of Paxton's hard work as a Bronco, and we wish him well in the future."

The Broncos will open the season on Sunday Sept. 9 when they host Seattle.
