Police say the victim was shot inside the store, and the suspect fled going north through the parking lot.

"As one of our police officers was traveling eastbound on 56th Avenue they observed a vehicle matching that description," said Tyrone Campbell, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.

Police responded to the area of Blackhawk Way and Randolph Place after a short foot chase.

"Our officers established a perimeter which we were in the process of searching when we had a homeowner in the area contact police saying that a black male party entered his home," said Campbell.

Police surrounded the house. The suspect then surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.

A man who lives next to the house where the suspect was hiding says the suspect knocked on his door first.

"I saw this guy come to my house real aggressive, knocking my door down, and he asked me for my phone, and I was like 'No, I don't have my phone charged.' So he left," the neighbor said, who wished not to be identified. "I was really scared when he knocked on my door."

Soon after, the man looked out of his window and saw all the police on his street.

That's when the reality of how close he was to danger setting in.

"(I'm) Really scared about my kids right now. I have a little one," said the man.

Police say the victim was in serious condition, but his injuries were "survivable."

Police have not determined if Sunday's shooting is related to another shooting in Montbello Saturday night.

They say they are investigating the cases separately right now.
