Police Arrest 21 In Cocaine, Meth, Prescription Drug Bust

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Breckenridge led a team of law enforcement officers to arrest 21 people in a major drug ring that included illegal drugs like cocaine, meth and prescription drugs.

Police say some of the drugs were sold within a few hundred yards of a daycare center with children. Other deals happened at bars and restaurants on Breckenridge's Main Street.

"We knew there were drugs in Summit County. I think every community has a drug present. I wasn't personally aware of the depth of the sales going on," said Breckenridge Police Chief Dennis McLaughlin.

Officers in the Breckenridge Police Department teamed up with officers from the Summit County Sheriff's Office, Dillon Police Department, Silverthorne Police Department, Frisco Police Department, Eagle County Drug Task Force, Leadville Police Department and the Summit County District Attorney's Office in the two-month operation.

The predominate drug was cocaine, we had LSD and GHB, which is often times used as the date rape drug," said McLaughlin.

The sweep is in response to several high-profile drug overdose deaths in the country, an epidemic felt across Colorado.

"This operation got started as a result of a death that we had in Breckenridge that the coroner ruled an overdose," said McLaughlin. "We hope this is a shout out across the bow to the drug dealers to show that we're not done. If you're selling drugs in Summit County, we're going to come after you. This is not the kind of community that we like to portray."

The mug shots of the suspects and the full list of charges is expected to be released by the Breckenridge Police Department on Friday.
