Car Stolen While Mom In Labor

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- A Lakewood couple's car was stolen while they were getting ready to go to the hospital because the mom-to-be thought she was in labor.

Turns out, she wasn't actually in labor but the thief has already taken off with their car, leaving the family without transportation.

"To have your car stolen while you're in labor. Dispatch kept asking me, 'What's your emergency?' I was like, 'I got my car stolen, and I'm having a baby,'" said Codie Rayl. "You can pick either one."

Baby Grace wasn't born the day the Rayl family's car was stolen, but her arrival at Swedish Medical Center has been a blessing.

The couple loaded up their overnight bags and the car seat for the newborn, they went back inside to get their first born and that's when the thief struck.

"We looked out the window and we saw the car backing up and it just took off," said Rayl.

Police in Lakewood say the car, stolen off Kendall Street, remains missing with no suspects. Anyone with information about the 2006 Chrysler 300 with Colorado license plates 631-TQQ is asked to call police.

"And that's what you did, you didn't take away a car, you took away a family's ability to sustain itself. You took away my ability to take my kids to their appointments," said Rayl.

For now the family is planning on using taxis and the bus to get around. They hope, for Baby Grace's sake, the car turns up so they can focus on raising their newborn daughter.

"We're trying to finagle either getting our car back, which is ultimately the best case scenario, or we're going to have to figure out a way to start over," said Rayl.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Rayl family with their expenses.
