Civil Rights Coalition To Closely Monitor Donald Trump
DENVER (CBS4) - Several Colorado attorneys have formed a new coalition to fight for civil rights.
Lawyers Civil Rights Coalition says their goal is to be prepared for any violations that may come up once President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office.
While no policy changes have been made just yet, David Lane, a civil rights attorney, says he's committed to protecting the people.
"Every time Donald Trump opens his mouth, he threatens the Bill of Rights," said Lane.
Lane is joining more than 100 lawyers across the state to stand up for civil rights, in response to comments made by President Elect Donald Trump, including infringements on freedom of speech.
"People say give Trump a chance, he may not be that bad," Lane said. "When Hitler was elected in Germany, people said the same thing."
Lane says the LCRC will also challenge issues like stop and frisk, something Trump has said would help reduce violent crimes.
"In my opinion, I see what's going on here," said Trump. "I see what's going on in Chicago. I think stop and frisk in NYC, it was so incredible how it worked."
But Lane says Trump's comments may translate differently to others.
"If you're a young Black or Hispanic man walking along the street, you can expect the cops to throw you against the wall and pat you down," Lane said.
With a network of attorneys from all walks of the law, Lane says they'll work together to fight injustice.
"I fully believe that Donald Trump means what he says," Lane said. "I'm not going to give him a chance."
But Trump supporters say not everything the he says should be taken literally.
"Who cares what he tweeted, you know, on some Thursday night, if we fix this country's big problems?" said Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. "That's just the way I look at this."
