LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – A man was found dead in a car after gunshots rang out in Lakewood Saturday evening.

Streets were blocked off in all directions near 9th Avenue and Allison Street for hours for the investigation.

While it is still early in the investigation, Lakewood police say they are investigating it as a homicide.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. When officers arrived they found the car in a ditch. The driver, identified as Phillip Peny, 44, was found shot to death inside, according to police.

Neighbors told CBS4’s Andrea Flores they heard as many as six gunshots before police got to the scene.

“It’s so scary that it’s this close to my corner here, but you know Denver is growing … it’s a big town, you hear a lot about this all the time, but I don’t like it in my neighborhood, though,” neighbor Shannon Weis said.

The investigation is ongoing. Lakewood police say they don’t believe there is any danger to public at this time.
