Thief Makes Unusual Purchase With Stolen Credit Card

By Lauren DiSpirito

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Deputies in Jefferson County are searching for a man who used a stolen credit card to purchase a home security system that will help prevent theft.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tweeted a series of surveillance pictures of the suspect as he walked out of a store in Jefferson County.

On Oct. 6 the suspect got the credit card out of a purse he stole by breaking through a parked car window outside Aspire Fitness on West Bowles Avenue in Littleton.

The car, and purse he stole, belong to Dana Hiler, who told CBS4 she had moved to Colorado from Idaho just three days before the crime. She had hidden her purse in the car and covered it with a jacket, but that still wasn't enough to prevent the theft.

"It's a violation for somebody to have to go through this," Hiler said.

She notified police and her banks, but not before the suspect was caught on camera using her card to make a purchase at the Best Buy store at 5395 South Wadsworth Boulevard. The suspect used the stolen card to buy a home security system, according to deputies.

"It was like, 'Seriously, you used my account for these types of things?'" Hiler said. "It's kind of ironic."

Deputies are hoping the public can help them identify the man in the surveillance images. Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to call investigators at (303) 271-5612 and reference case #16-26113.
