Post-It Note Scam Targets Douglas County Homeowners

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Bogus Post-It Notes are the newest scam to hit Douglas County. The notes are pasted on the front doors of homes. They resemble messages from a delivery company that tried to leave a package- in this case the fictional "Metro Delivery."

The message asks the homeowner to call them to set up a delivery time. When the homeowner calls, the person on the other end of the line tries to steal personal information.

Lamia Alhombre and two of her neighbors in Highlands Ranch were targeted by the crooks, with a slight variation.

"One time I got a sticker saying, 'Be careful, you need to call this number. You have an emergency,' something about my husband. It was not true. I had to call the cops." she said.

Sgt. Derek Castellano with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says legitimate delivery companies already have your information.

"There's all sorts of fishing scams out there. The main thing is if they're asking for your personal information, don't give it out," he told CBS4's Tom Mustin.

Luckily, Lamia never gave out her information, but Castellano says there have been victims across the county. Unsuspecting residents have given out everything from credit card numbers, to home security codes. He says with the holidays approaching, homeowners need to be on guard.

"They can open up an account in your name. They can purchase stuff under your name. They can do a lot of things with your personal information, so don't give them any personal information."

That's a message Lamia and her neighbors have received loud and clear.

"You cannot even believe that we are living here and people can stick a note and write something like that," she said.

Deputies say they have no idea who's behind the scam, but if you have any questions or concerns regarding a delivery, call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at (303) 784-7880.
