Man Arrested After Running Away From Moving Car On I-25

FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. (CBS4)- A man was arrested after leading police on a chase and jumping out of a moving vehicle as it was rolling down Interstate 25. Officers finally found him hiding underneath another vehicle.

It all began during a routine patrol Sunday morning when Federal Heights police were led to an apartment complex with a history of stolen vehicles.

"I noticed a black Honda vehicle that was backed into a parking space," said Federal Heights Police Sgt. Frank Turek. "The vehicle didn't have any front license plate on it and the front grill was missing."

The parking space was very familiar to Turek, "I had recovered personally two stolen vehicles from that location, that people had stolen and left the cars there abandoned."

Turek said the driver of the stole vehicle, Bruce LaBute, took off and led officers on a chase from Federal Heights to southbound I-25. Mechanical issues stopped the suspect in his tracks.

"He ended up pulling over to the side of the roadway and actually got out of the car as it was still moving and then took off running on foot," said Turek. "I was able to get into the car and pull the emergency brake to stop the car from rolling any further."

Officers found LaBute, 26, hiding under a truck at a car dealership at 73rd Avenue and Broadway Street. He had a gun.

"The gun was fully loaded, there were seven rounds in the gun, six in the magazine and one in the chamber, so it was ready to go," said Turek.

LaBute surrendered before anyone was hurt. He faces charges that include auto theft, possession of a weapon and reckless driving.
