The WorldView-4 blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California just before noon. It was built by Lockheed Martin in Littleton and will be operated by Westminster's DigitalGlobe, the company behind the images seen on Google Maps.

The newest spacecraft can take clear pictures of objects roughly the size of a football field anywhere on Earth's surface.
