Drivers Delayed Along I-70 For Rockfall Mitigation

GEORGETOWN, Colo. (CBS4) - Drivers along Interstate 70 near Georgetown were delayed on Tuesday for rockfall mitigation.

Crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation conducted rockfall mitigation work.

CDOT crews closed the road for 20 minutes at a time which resulted in delays of up to two hours for drivers.

The helicopter placed netting along the top of some peaks to keep rocks from falling onto the lanes below.

The closures were scheduled from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday on Georgetown Hill.

"We really encourage them to take a look at the travel time ahead of time so they are not getting stuck in this traffic," said CDOT spokeswoman Stacia Sellers.

Alternate routes included west from Denver to Highway 40 through Winter Park or from Summit County take Highway 9 to Highway 285 through Fairplay.
