Man With Machete On CU Campus Shot, Killed
BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- Police on the University of Colorado campus issued an alert about a man with a machete on campus Wednesday morning minutes before he was shot and killed.
CU campus police issued the all clear shortly after the suspect was shot.
CU spokesman Scott Pribble said that the suspect was not following directions given by officers and that's when a Boulder police officer fired his weapon.
"He was directed to put the weapon down and refused and it's believed, in the interest of public safety, that he was shot," said Pribble.
Police tweeted an update about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday that the man was in the Champion Center on campus near Folsom Field and had a machete, which was described as a sharp object.
Everyone on campus was urged to take protective action. A text message was sent to CU students and staff warning them of the incident.
The suspect has not been identified.
Pribble said the situation started with an altercation in the parking lot of the Champion Center.
The Champion Center is the new home of the CU football and athletic administration with a sports center, trainers offices, exam rooms, weight room, training area and staff offices.
People were urged to avoid the Champion Center while the investigation continues.
Hours after the shooting, police responded to a report of an active shooter at the school's student union but concluded it was false. Both the sports complex and the University Memorial Center, home of the campus' bookstore and cafeteria, were closed as police investigated both events.
In both cases, the university sent text alerts to all students, faculty and staffers telling them to take protective action but classes continued.
