The student who died has been identified as Kyra Connolly, 17, a senior at Castle View High School and daughter of a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy.

"The preliminary investigation shows Connolly was driving on the wrong side of the road when her vehicle sideswiped another car, and then collided head-on with a Douglas County School District delivery truck," the Douglas County coroner said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

Connolly's friends and classmates were devastated to learn of her passing.

"It was genuinely heartbreaking to know that someone I got so close to... and I had seen that morning... is no longer here," said student Dani Ormond.

Some students gathered near the spot where Connolly crashed. Flowers and other mementos were placed there in remembrance of her.

"For unknown reasons one of those vehicles crossed the double yellow line and it was a head-on collision," a Castle Rock police officer told CBS4.

One driver of the delivery truck was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

The third driver was not injured.castle-rock-fatal-ax

Hundreds of students gathered to remember Connolly at a candlelight vigil on Tuesday night.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in Connolly's memory.
