JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- A fallen Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy was honored on Wednesday with a memorial sign placed near where he was struck and killed last year.

Sgt. Sean P. Renfro was honored Wednesday morning with the dedication of a seven mile stretch of Highway 285 as the "Sergeant Sean P. Renfro Memorial Highway."

The dedication ceremony was at mile marker 245 on the southbound side of U.S. 285, four miles north of where Renfro was struck and killed on Jan. 3, 2015.

Renfro was off duty at the time when he stopped to offer assistance to passengers involved in a single vehicle accident. Another driver lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center median and collided with the vehicle that Renfro was standing near.

Renfro was killed and two others were injured.

"Sergeant Renfro died doing what he did every day protecting and serving the citizens of Jefferson County. He deserves to be remembered for his 15 year career and his actions that day. With the renaming of US 285, I believe he will be," said Jefferson County Sheriff Shrader in a statement.
