Man Sentenced To 45 Years For Attempted Murder

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- A man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for attempted first-degree murder and attempted sexual assault in an attack on a woman at an Aurora motel in 2014.

"This 45-year sentence means that this defendant will never hurt another member of our community," 17th Judicial District Attorney Dave Young said in a statement.

Officers were called to the Pace Setter Motel located at 14291 E. Colfax just before 5 a.m. March 26, 2014 on reports of a stabbing and assault.

When officers arrived they found a 20-year-old woman who had been sexually assaulted at knife point. She tole police that Jamal Michael Miles became violent when she asked him to leave her room and he beat, raped and stabbed her before she was able to escape.

She was rushed to University Hospital in serious condition with a skull fracture and deep lacerations to her neck, hands and head.

"Mr. Miles beat the victim, he strangled her, he stabbed her, he slit her throat, he raped her and he attempted to drown her in a bathtub," Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Mason said in a statement. "He then dragged her near a ditch on Sable Boulevard where he undoubtedly would have finished her off, but for the heroic intervention of a good Samaritan, who stopped when she saw the victim screaming for help and rendered aid, causing the defendant to flee. Mr. Miles is a dangerous human being who should be kept out of society for a long time. This 45-year sentence will do precisely that."
