AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- The man who pleaded guilty to killing a 2-year-old girl was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison.

"This was not a sentence that I was looking for rehabilitation, this was a sentence where I wanted to see this defendant punished for what he did," said Deputy District Attorney Gary Dawson.

Police rushed to the apartment where Ny'ari lived with her mother and Jones on Aug. 18, 2014.

Ny'ari's mother told police she had left her daughter all day with Jones while she was at work. When she came home the girl was having trouble breathing and was holding her stomach. Her mom tried to treat her for constipation but she got worse and stopped breathing. Ny'ari was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital.

Jones denied knowing anything was seriously wrong with Ny'ari but admitted several times he was the only person home with her all day.

The coroner found evidence of blunt force trauma to Ny'ari's abdomen that caused a perforation in her bowel which caused severe internal bleeding.

"The child was violently beaten to cause a perforation in her bowel that caused her to lose a third of a liter of blood that was inside her body cavity and she eventually went into septic shock and died from that," said Dawson.

In 2013, Jones was paralyzed when he was shot multiple times by anti-gang activist Terrance Roberts in Denver's Park Hill neighborhood. Roberts said he was acting in self-defense.
