GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - A man accused of killing a woman in a crash while fleeing from police in February of 2015 has received a lengthy prison sentence.

According to Pam Russell with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, Spencer Jay Minton, 23, was found guilty in June of vehicular homicide, vehicular eluding with death, leaving the scene of an accident with death, leaving the scene with property damage, first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault.

On Monday a judge sentenced Minton to 20 years in prison for the death of 23-year-old Elissa Ross.

"The collision occurred in Adams County, but the district attorney for Jefferson and Gilpin counties was appointed as special prosecutor in the case," Russell said in a statement.

Justin James Sturtevant, 27, was Minton's codefendant in the case and on parole at the time of the offense. He has already been sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in the crash.

According to Russell, Minton and Sturtevant were in separate cars and spotted by a Brighton police officer driving recklessly. The officer attempted to pull the vehicles over but a chase ensued.

"They sped in tandem, weaving in and out of traffic, crossing yellow lines designating no-pass zones," Russell said.

During the chase Sturtevant attempted to pass a car and hit a car driven by Ross head-on. Ross died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Minton didn't stop after the collision and was arrested later that day.
