LAKEWOOD Colo. (CBS4) – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting outside of a convenience store in Lakewood left a suspect dead.

A man who was sitting inside of an old pickup truck parked outside of the 7-Eleven on Sheridan Boulevard and West 1st Avenue was shot during a confrontation with officers that lasted several hours. Police on Saturday afternoon said the suspect succumbed to his injuries.

"I heard the cop saying, 'Put your gun down, put your gun down,'" said Barbara Alcon, a neighbor. "And then I heard a bang."

The bang made Alcon worry for her former coworkers at the convenience store across the street.

"I was praying that they were okay, because we're really close," said Alcon.

Conrad Gonzales, another neighbor, said that he had seen the man working outside the 7-Eleven many times before.

"He usually cleans the snow, shovels the snow, picks up all the trash around the building," Gonzales said.

Police shut down several blocks Saturday as the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team investigated the incident that began around 4:20 a.m.

"When Lakewood agents contacted the subject, he produced what was believed by the agents to be some kind of weapon," said Rob Albrets, an agent with the Lakewood Police Department.

Officers backed off and got in touch with the suspect by phone.

According to police, the suspect said that he was armed. At that point, the West Metro SWAT Team responded.

Shots rang out at 7:20 a.m.

Police told residents to stay inside.

"My daughter had to miss work because of it," Gonzales said. "Because they wouldn't let (anybody) out."

Neighbors say they're relieved that police got a suspect off the street but sad that the ordeal ended in gunfire.
