First Responders In Boulder Use Pet Oxygen Masks

By Suzanne McCarroll

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - First responders in Boulder are getting some new equipment to help dogs, cats, and other animals survive fires—oxygen masks.

Allison Kean, a veterinarian for the Humane Society of Boulder, says smoke poses a threat to animals caught in a house or a wildfire. It's estimated as many as 150,000 pets in the U.S. die in fires each year, mostly from smoke inhalation.

"As we know from any kind of fire exposure or smoke exposure, oxygen is critical for humans but also for pets and it's something we haven't been able to provide for pets in these fire situations. It can make a huge difference in long term recovery," said Kean.

Kean is thrilled that first responders in Boulder are provided with oxygen masks designed specifically for pets.

Kim Scott of Boulder Fire and Rescue demonstrated how easily the masks slip on to an animal, covering the mouth and nose of a dog or a cat.

"The other end of the mask is connected to the oxygen tank and we're able to provide immediate oxygen and care to the pet," Scott.

Firefighters say during a fire if people are suffering from smoke inhalation, chances are good the pets are too.

The masks were donated by the company, Invisible Fence. The company hopes to distribute them to first responders throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Pet owners in Boulder are thrilled. Recent wildfires have flamed worries about evacuating pets in an emergency situation.

"Everyone has a dog and everyone's not always allowed to go home and get their dog. It's great you're providing ways to save pets, giving them a better chance," said Josh Bowen.
