New Production Of 'Phantom' Has Some Big Differences

DENVER (CBS4) - A new production of "Phantom of the Opera" opens on Aug. 25 at Denver's Buell Theatre, and audience-goers will notice some differences from the original musical.

You might say Phantom is ingrained in the walls of the Buell and performance halls like it across the world. So how dare they tinker with the show?

Seth Sklar-Heyn is part of a team of professionals who felt that they could. The associate director and executive producer of the show said that "after two and a half decades, it was time to take something that had become truly iconic and shift it slightly."

"As the one person on the team who goes back and forth between the 'Brilliant Original' and the current 'Spectacular New Production' I get to see a lot of the differences, and they boil down to the details within the performances in terms of the small," said Sklar-Heyn. "But in terms of the broad strokes, you're looking at the scenic design having changed, the physical staging having changed.

"I think the pulse of the piece has changed in a lot of ways."

None of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music has changed, but the sets are different. The chandelier scene works differently and a few numbers have been restaged to bring the phantom into the action sooner.
