Hillary Clinton Focuses On Jobs During Commerce City Campaign Stop

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton talked about jobs during her campaign stop in Colorado on Wednesday.

Colorado was a popular destination for both the Republicans and Democrats as Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence also spoke in Denver on Wednesday afternoon.

The message resonates in Adams County which was hit hard by the recession and has been slow to recover.

Voters have made Adams County a reliably blue county for decades but who have been largely left behind by the recovery. Many have shifted to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump with his anti-trade message.

State representative Dominic Moreno grew up here, and says democrats can no longer take Adams County for granted.

"You have plenty of working class voters here that are taking a serious look at Donald Trump. And I've never really understood that because how is a billionaire going to advocate for you? People are feeling left behind in this economy," he said.

The change in those disaffected workers was evident in the 2014 election, when republicans took more races here than they had in nearly 80 years.

Clinton appealed to the working class voters who make up most of the electorate in that part of Colorado, where the median family income ranks below the state average.

She promised to revive two of Adams County's biggest industries: construction and manufacturing.

"We're not satisfied with where we are in the country but we think we know how to make progress together. We think we can put into effect a jobs program that will create millions of new jobs with rising incomes," said Clinton.
