Team CBS4 Takes On A Ghost Run

By Libby Smith

DENVER (CBS4) - Runner's Edge of the Rockies holds weekly training runs, and recently they set up a special Ghost Run. There were clues and selfie check points all in connection to the "Ghostbuster" movie as well as the launch of Brooks' new Ghost 9 running shoes.

"I feel like I have a pretty good arches," said Team CBS4 runner Karen Morfitt as she was trying on the new Ghost 9 shoe.

"Yeah, so it's got pretty good arch support. It's for somebody that's a little more neutral, meaning that when they run they don't have any flexibility or movement. We call that pronation," replied Amy Smith, the Brooks guru on hand to help with the promotion.

Morfitt and Team CBS4 member Britt Moreno got to take the new shoes for a test run. Morfitt admitted to buying shoes for the look of them, but getting a good pair of shoes can prevent injuries like shin splints, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.

"Shoes come in different shapes and support categories. Some people have high strong arches so they go into something like this the neutral shoe, so that the shoe itself isn't really trying to change the motion of the foot that much. Some people have some weaker arches. When you have a weaker arch you have to get something that's built up a little bit on the inside. They can stick like a stiffer wedge in a shoe to level the foot back," said Joel Hamilton, coach for Runner's Edge of the Rockies.

Not only were Morfitt and Moreno wearing the new shoes, and looking for the ghostly locations along the route, they also set a goal to run 8 miles.

"The most I've ever run in my life is like 7 … 7 ½," Moreno told Morfitt.

"What we're really trying to do at this point is establish a good consistent base, to have that foundation, so as we get into the months of August and September and they start building their miles for Rock 'n' Roll Denver," said David Manthey, coach for Runner's Edge of the Rockies.

The run went well. Morfitt and Moreno made their 8-mile goal and felt strong at the finish.

"There's a misconception out there that if you want to train for a race or you want to get faster you have to do all of your runs fast or you have to run all of training runs at race pace, and that's absolutely not true. One of the training mantras that we use at Runner's Edge of the Rockies is 'Train slow to race fast,' so about two-thirds of our long Saturday runs are going to be run at about a minute slower than race pace," Manthey told CBS4.
