Grand Junction Man Assisting Tubers In Wisconsin Collapses, Dies

MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) - A man who was assisting a group of tubers on the Red Cedar River has died after he was found not breathing in the water.

Authorities say the incident happened Monday at a boat landing in the town of Dunn.

The Dunn County Sheriff's Office says 74-year-old Gene Wayne Palmer of Grand Junction, Colorado, went into the river at the landing with a tube and was trying to help a group of tubers. He was found unconscious in the water and wasn't breathing.

Palmer was taken by helicopter to an Eau Claire hospital, where he died. The Dunn County medical examiner says Palmer apparently collapsed into the water after suffering a medical problem.

Palmer originally was from rural Boyceville and spent his summers in Dunn County.
