Hickenlooper Meets With Hillary Clinton
DENVER (CBS4) - Hillary Clinton may be considering Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper as her running mate.
Hickenlooper met with Clinton in Washington, D.C. on Friday, although he has previously deflected interest in the job. But now the governor may want the position.
"I think it sounds swell," said U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colorado.
DeGette has worked with Hickenlooper since he was Denver's mayor 12 years ago.
"I think he's an innovative thinker, he's got an entrepreneurial spirit. We've never had somebody in the White House from Colorado and I think it would be really exciting," she said.
Hickenlooper was part of a parade of potential vice presidential candidates who met with Clinton on Friday.
"Anytime the Democratic nominee calls you and says she wants to talk to you about the potential of being vice president I think you have to talk to her. I think it's a great honor for him," DeGette said.
Hickenlooper declined to comment on the meeting. He's also never openly talked about wanting to move to a larger political stage.
"I think he would love to see a new challenge, and really, as I say, I think he'd do great job," DeGette said.
In the big picture of winning the White House, DeGette thinks Colorado could be as crucial as it has been in the past.
"President Obama won Colorado and in 2008 and again in 2012. I know that Hillary is paying a lot of attention to our state. I've talked to her about it," DeGette said. "I think the road to the White House does go through Colorado."
Hickenlooper is one of six Clinton vice presidential candidates. Others include Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
