Neighbor Unknowingly Watches Burglary Getaway

By Lauren DiSpirito

JEFFERSON COUNTY (CBS4) - Jefferson County deputies are looking for two people they believe are responsible for a string of home burglaries and other failed attempts to steal items from garages.

At approximately 3 p.m. On Tuesday, law enforcement received a call about an attempted burglary on the 1000 block of West Rowland Avenue. Deputies say a homeowner reported coming home to find two people, a man and a woman, trying to break into his garage. The homeowner told dispatchers that the suspects had fled in a U-Haul van.

Deputies later found that U-Haul vehicle abandoned at a dead end on the 5900 block of South Jellison Street. Witnesses there told CBS4 they saw a man and woman arguing about where to go, then stuff items into their backpacks and run away, leaving the van behind.

Deputies found signs of an attempted break-in at a home on South Independence Street, near the location where the suspects had ditched the van. A law enforcement spokeswoman says no one was home at the time of that attempted burglary.

Finally, deputies say the pair broke into a home on the 9500 block of West Capri Avenue. Investigators believe the pair ransacked the home, stole items and fled by stealing the homeowner's black 2012 Dodge Ram pickup, with license plate #622RYY. They are asking anyone who sees the vehicle to call 911.

As deputies were combing his neighborhood on Capri Avenue, John Greaney thinks he spotted one of the two suspects they were looking for. At the time, he thought the dark-haired woman he saw leave his neighbor's home and drive off in a pickup truck was a family member. When police started asking him questions, he realized she was not.

"I was like 'Wait a minute, I saw her leave,'" Greaney said. "They just walked right out, like they lived there, walked right out, got in the truck."

No one was hurt in the spree. Law enforcement are not saying what was stolen.
