4-Year-Old Sole Survivor Hospitalized In Train Vs. Van Crash
TRINIDAD, Colo. (CBS4) - A 4-year-old girl was the sole survivor of a crash that killed her family when a train struck a vehicle near Trinidad Sunday morning.
Heidi Miller was flown to Children's Hospital in Aurora after the crash. She remained in serious condition on Monday morning.
The Colorado State Patrol said the crash occurred on Las Animas County Road 32, approximately 3 miles north of Trinidad just before 10 a.m. Sunday.
A van carrying six people -- two adults and four children -- was struck by the Southwest Chief Amtrak train en route from Chicago to Los Angeles. Heidi's parents and three siblings were killed.
Authorities are not yet releasing the names of the victims, but according to a GoFundMe account the victims are Steve and Christina Miller and their children Abigail, 6, Kathryn, 2, and Ellianna, 8 months.
Investigators said the driver of the van failed to yield right of way to the train but that the van wasn't stopped on the tracks. There are many questions about why the vehicle crossed into the path of the train.
The family was headed to church when their van crossed directly in front of the train which was en route from Chicago to Los Angeles. There were 286 people on board the train. No one on board the train was injured.
