Suspect In Shooting Of Popular Doctor Found Competent To Stand Trial

DENVER (AP) — A judge ruled Monday that a suburban Denver man is competent to stand trial in the shooting death of a neighbor and the wounding of two other people.

Chief District Court Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. made the decision after the state mental hospital found Kevin Lyons does not have mental or developmental problems that hinder his participation in his defense, the Denver Post reports.

Lyons had made repeated outbursts during earlier court hearings, but was subdued Monday.

Lyons faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Dr. Ken Atkinson, who had run from his Centennial home to help two women when shooting broke out April 4.

One of the women wounded was the 46-year-old Lyons' wife. Lyons also faces attempted murder charges.
