Man Who Fell Off Raft Turns Out To Be Parole Absconder

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — A rafter who disappeared after falling into the Arkansas River apparently didn't want to be found because he was wanted for skipping his parole.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says 31-year-old Styron Smith of Canon City was one of five people who fell into the river when their raft flipped on Saturday. The others, including a 1-year-old child, were quickly recovered but searchers looking for Smith by foot, raft, Jet Ski and helicopter found no sign of him.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Sgt. Megan Richards says authorities found out Smith was wanted for absconding from parole on an assault conviction.

On Sunday morning, the search was called off after Smith's family reported that some of the clothes that he had been wearing when he fell overboard were found at home.
