Massive Fatal Crash On I-70 In Golden Closes Highway For 4 Hours

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - All lanes of westbound Interstate 70 were closed at 6th Avenue during the Tuesday afternoon commute after several vehicles were involved in a serious fatal crash in Golden.

The crash brought the evening rush to a standstill. The highway was closed for more than four hours because of the massive scene.

Police say the area is a particularly dangerous part of the highway and the crash happened when the roadway was at its busiest -- at the beginning of the evening commute.

Dark skid marks on the road marked where the violent crash killed a driver and sent another person to the hospital. The chaotic scene was littered with a semi-truck crashed in the median and three cars mangled on the highway, including a black Toyota 4Runner that had its driver's side completely destroyed.

Mike O'Neil drove up to the scene moments after the crash and saw first responders giving CPR to one of the victims.

"They did it for quite a while and then they realized it was hopeless," O'Neil said.

Police have not said who was at fault. State troopers conducted a detailed investigation of the semi.

The crash was so large a special investigative team was brought in to piece the collision together. Golden police expect to get a moment-by-moment account of what happened.
