Family Has Habit Of Getting Help From Firefighters When Giving Birth

By Suzanne McCarroll

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - An Aurora fire crew didn't have to go far for a 911 call last weekend. A pregnant woman was on the verge of delivering her baby on the lawn outside Fire Station No. 7. And there's an odd twist to the special delivery.

Nicole Web-Phillips, 23, and her mother were on their way to the hospital when they had to pull over at the local fire station. The baby was coming. Firefighter Zac Varela says the crew was sound asleep at 4 a.m. Sunday.

"Two guys of our crew heard somebody banging on the back of the fire station asking for help," Varela said.

Web-Phillips picked up the story from there.

"I needed help and they certainly helped and they helped all the way through until she got here," Web-Phillips said.

Seven-pound Endiya was born moments after mom and grandma arrived at the fire station. Even the fire crew was in disbelief.

"I don't think it's ever happened on the ramp of our fire house, that's for sure," Varela said.

But what is equally remarkable, Web-Phillips was born 23 years ago also on her way to an Aurora hospital, also with the help of Aurora firefighters. She told CBS4's Suzanne McCarroll it is an odd coincidence.

"Were you thinking how ironic it was that you were born in an ambulance?" McCarroll asked.

"Yes, I was," Web-Phillips replied.

Nicole's mother, Yvonnie Webb-Phillips, says that's just how the women in the family deliver.

"We deliver quickly, starting with me," she said.

Endiya is a beautiful healthy baby. Her mother and grandmother hope that the tradition of delivering in the back of an ambulance doesn't continue through the generations.
