Students Protested Outside Regis Jesuit High Over Claims Of Sexism

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- A small group of students protested outside Regis Jesuit High School on Friday afternoon. They were upset over what they claim to be sexist comments made by some boys.

The debate began when the school brought two classes together- one made up of all girls and the other of all boys- to discuss gender issues.

After the discussion, videos and tweets showed up on social media that some considered offensive. Those posts have since been removed.

The students claim some of the videos promoted rape and even named some students. They claim the boys involved seemed to get away with their actions without any discipline.

Some students from other schools tried to join the protest but were told they would be arrested if they stepped on campus. The school said anyone who is not affiliated with the school would have presented a security threat.

The gathering was held just outside the school property boundary. The students said their message was to put an end to a culture of sexism.

"We definitely did make our voices heard so that they know what we want and what we want to see," said Regis Jesuit High senior Destiny Scaise.

"Making those types of comments is not okay... ever," said Grandview High senior Nicola Walker.

"I mean, it's a big deal, it's rape so it should be talked about," said Regis Jesuit High sophomore Peter Spiliotis.

Regis Jesuit High School released this statement, "The messages that have been posted are counter to everything we teach and do as Jesuit School. We will not tolerate threats of physical or sexual violence against any of our students."

School administrators told CBS4 that they are looking into what happened. Two male students have been suspended indefinitely.
