Peyton Manning Is No John Elway, Will Have To Wait For Ring Of Fame Honors

DENVER (CBS4) - The Denver Broncos on Tuesday announced the three latest great players that have been elected to the Ring of Fame, but they all had to wait at least five years after their retirement to even be considered for the honor. But there's one former Bronco who didn't have to wait at all -- John Elway.

Kicker Jason Elam, linebacker Simon Fletcher and safety John Lynch will be inducted during a ceremony that will happen during halftime of a Broncos home game this season, the date to be announced.

After the announcement was made there was speculation that Peyton Manning could be the only other Bronco besides Elway who didn't have to wait the five-years to get elected to the Ring of Fame. Broncos President Joe Ellis quashed that idea during the Ring of Fame news conference.

"We did not consider that here and I actually had conversations with Peyton about that and explained that to him right before he came down here and retired. That's where that stood," Ellis said. "We considered that for one guy who I think everyone would justifiably argue was the greatest player in franchise history and has a special place in our owner's heart and deserved that award at that time."

Manning undoubtedly understands, but also probably knows he will be elected to the Ring of Fame the first year he's eligible in 2020.
