Ms. Wheelchair Colorado Needs Help To Compete In Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant

DENVER (CBS4) - A Coloradan is competing in a national pageant, and she needs help getting there.

Amber Gersch is competing in the Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant this coming Fall. Last March she was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Colorado.

Gersch was born with spina bifida in 1981 and has since gone through more than 30 surgeries. According to her GoFundMe account, she lives independently with her dog, Boo Boo.

Gersch enjoys working with children and teaching them about what it's like to live with a disability.

Gersch says she was bullied as a child, prompting her platform on anti-bullying.

"My platform is anti-bullying. I'm an educator, so I see bullying first hand and I was also bullied," Gersch said in an interview with CBS4's Mark Taylor. "I don't want to see other people -- kids especially -- hurt, hurt themselves or kill themselves or be killed just because of bullying. That's unacceptable and it shouldn't happen and I'm going to try to do my best speaking about it and try to get some even ground."

All funds raised on her GoFundMe page will go toward travel expenses to the Ms. Wheelchair America Nationals in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
