Spina Bifida Walk N' Roll Brings Community Together

DENVER (CBS4)- The snowy and cold weather on Sunday didn't put the brakes on the Spina Bifida Walk N' Roll in Wash Park.

Although the turnout was a little less than anticipated, it was a chance for the community to get together.

Evan Maskus is 6 years old and he has been to the Spina Bifida Walk N' Roll every year.

"To see that he's not alone in this situation and this had become our family," said Evan's mom Lisa.

The Walk N' Roll attracts hundreds of people across Colorado who are living with Spina Bifida.

"Basically it's getting the community together, coming out, having fun, getting to know each other," said Spina Bifida Walk N' Roll Chairman Mark DeShamp.

DeShamp said the birth defect affects people in different ways.

This year's event featured a special guest, Amber Gersch, "I am Miss Wheelchair Colorado 2016 and I have Spina Bifida.

Gersch was crowned Miss Wheelchair Colorado in March. She rain on an anti-bullying platform.

"When I grew up I didn't know anyone in a wheelchair," said Gersch.

Gersch said for every one of the children crossing the finish line, it's important for them to develop a sense of community. It also helps raise awareness and funds to help those living with Spina Bifida.

"Kids need to know that even though they are in a wheelchair and they are in the minority they are not alone," said Gersch.

The annual event benefits the Spina Bifida Association of Colorado.
