"You never know who you're contacting. Anytime you approach a vehicle, or a subject, for any reason, you don't know what their intentions are," said Ty Countryman of the Lakewood Police Department.

The suspect was killed in the exchange of fire. His identity has not been released.

A woman who was in the car was taken into custody for questioning. She was not injured.
