Doctor Killed, 2 Wounded In Neighbor's Shooting Rampage

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - A Centennial neighborhood is stunned after a man opened fire on his wife and two neighbors who tried to help Monday afternoon.

It happened at approximately 1:15 p.m. in a neighborhood near South Monaco Street and Dry Creek Road.

Several people in the area called 911 to report gun shots. Witnesses say the gunman initially was firing shots at his wife, then began firing at the two who stepped in.

One man was killed, a well-known neighbor and a doctor with a practice in the area. He and another witness attempted to intervene as the suspect was firing shots.

All three victims were transported to the hospital, where the doctor died. The shooter's wife is expected to survive, and the condition of the other neighbor who tried to help is unknown.

The community, even law enforcement, is shocked at this tragedy in one of the safest communities.

"This is generally a very safe, quiet community. The city of Centennial is considered one of the safest cities in the United States and in Colorado as well, and it's unfortunate these type of incidents happen but the good thing is that we believe we have the suspect in custody," said Arapahoe County Undersheriff Louie Perea.

Investigators continued documenting evidence inside a home in the area well into the night, and remained on scene Tuesday morning. They say it is too early to identify a motive for the shooting.

The suspect was arrested in the backyard of a nearby house shortly after. He has not been identified, but Perea says investigators believe he lives in the area.
