ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CBS4)– The mother of one of the Columbine shooters will speak at a mental health conference in June.

Mental Health America announced on Monday that Sue Klebold will speak at MHA’s annual conference.

Her son, Dylan, was one of two shooters who planned and carried out an attack at Columbine High School in Jefferson County.

Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris opened fire at their school on April 20, 1999, killing 13 people before taking their own lives. Another 24 people were injured in the attack.

Last month Klebold released her memoir, “A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy,” exploring the causes of her son’s violence and ways to prevent future attacks by others through mental health awareness.

Klebold has given some television interviews but this appears to be her first public speaking appearance since the mass shooting.

“After remaining silent for almost 20 years, Sue Klebold is speaking out,” said Paul Gionfriddo, president and CEO, MHA in a statement. “Her message is a powerful one—that while she can’t erase what Dylan did, she can talk openly about the importance of early identification and intervention of mental health concerns—before Stage 4—so that we can hopefully prevent crises and tragedies, not just respond and react to them after it’s too late.”

MHA’s conference is June 8-10 in Alexandria, Virginia with the theme “Media, Messaging and Mental Health.”
