Snowplows Out In Full Force As Roads Expected To Get Much Worse

DENVER (CBS4) - The roads will get worse as the night goes on, but Denver Public Works and Colorado Department of Transportation road crews are out in full force.

Even before the snow started to accumulate CDOT was out using materials like mag chloride to help with traction. Tankers have the ability to treat three lanes at once.

CDOT crews say they're more than ready for the winter storm with more than 900 plows all across the state on 12-hour shifts. Crews will be focusing on metro Denver, the mountains, and the Eastern Plains -- wherever the snow is hitting the hardest.

It will also be the first winter storm with CDOT's new snowplow monitoring system.

"This system helps us by allowing us to better understand what's happening with our vehicles, how much gas we are using, where we are going, the routes we are traveling, even mechanical issues that we might have in the trucks," Amy Ford with CDOT said.

Denver Public Works is also on full snow patrol and even implemented their residential snowplow plan which includes residential side streets.

Snow is really piling up in the high country and a rash of accidents caused CDOT to close parts of Interstate 70 during the day on Monday.

More than a foot of snow has fallen in Frisco which is delighting skiers and snowboarders who told CBS4's Matt Kroschel the conditions were excellent on Monday.

Both CDOT and Public Works will continue to work until the roads are clear, possibly into Wednesday.
