Fort Collins Police Will Investigate Fatal Shooting Of Hostage Situation Suspect

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4/AP) — Fort Collins Police Services investigators will be leading the investigation into a fatal shooting of a suspect by a Larimer County deputy.

A deputy in Larimer County shot and killed a man who had taken a woman hostage in a mobile home park northeast of Fort Collins. The incident began about 11 p.m. Friday and ended with the man, identified as Phillip B. Salazar, 38, being shot about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Lt. Bobby Moll of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office says the initial call to police reported a domestic disturbance.

Moll says it turned into a barricaded and hostage situation when police arrived.

"The SWAT team arrived and they came out with negotiators and after a lengthy negotiation and barricaded episode shots were fired and the subject was deceased," said one Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The sheriff's office said Salazar refused to release the female hostage.

"The deputy reported that he believed the suspect had a weapon in his hand as he advanced on him," the sheriff's office said in a statement Monday.

The name of the woman hasn't been released.

"The Critical Incident Protocol has been activated and Fort Collins Police Services will be leading the investigation," the sheriff's office said.
